Mindfulness

“Mindfulness is the awareness that arises when we pay attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally.” – Jon Kabat-Zinn

What is Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the practice of paying full attention to the present moment with openness and without judgment. It means noticing your thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surroundings as they are, rather than getting caught up in worries about the past or future.

A key part of mindfulness is present-moment awareness. You focus on what is happening right now, such as your breathing or physical sensations. When your mind wanders, you gently bring it back without criticising yourself.

Mindfulness also involves a non-judgmental attitude. Instead of labelling thoughts or emotions as good or bad, you observe them with curiosity and acceptance. This helps reduce overreacting and self-criticism.

Another important aspect is acceptance. Mindfulness teaches you to allow thoughts and feelings to come and go naturally, without trying to control or avoid them. By observing rather than reacting, you can respond to situations more calmly and clearly.

Mindfulness can be practiced through meditation, breathing exercises, body scans, or mindful movement like yoga. It can also be used in everyday activities, such as eating or walking.

Regular practice can reduce stress, improve focus, strengthen emotional regulation, and support overall wellbeing.
